IMO –
the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO's work supports the UN sustainable development goals.
A series of workshops held in Dhaka and Chattogram in Bangladesh has equipped up to 300 key stakeholders with essential knowledge about how to recycle ships in a safe and environmentally-sound manner. Four workshops held between April and May 2024 engaged ship managers, representatives of regulatory bodies and other stakeholders.
Caribbean Member States have been updated on the latest developments at IMO during the Regional Meeting of Directors and Heads of Maritime Administrations (DIHMAR 3) in Rockley, Christ Church, Barbados (2-3 May 2024). Directors and Heads of maritime administrations were informed on information resources for latest regulatory and other developments at IMO.
The final piece of the puzzle in the liability and compensation treaty regime for shipping will fall into place when the 2010 Convention on Liability for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea (HNS) enters into force.
