Preparing for future emerging global health threats
IMO attended the first World Health Organization meeting on Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats held in Geneva, Switzerland (24-26 April) to assist in global efforts led by WHO to better prepare for possible future disease pandemics.
Boosting Maritime Security in Mauritius
IMO is working with the Mauritian maritime administration to put in place a legal framework that gives full and complete effect to IMO instruments dealing with maritime security. A workshop (2-4 May) in Port Louis, Mauritius, has brought together 30 participants from key national agencies as part of a capacity building initiative in the region.
Draft revised Biofouling Guidelines approved at PPR 10th session
The Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response has approved the revised Guidelines for the control and management of ships' biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species. It came during the Sub-Committee's 10th session (24-28 April) and follows a comprehensive review of the Guidelines.
Carbon Intensity Indicator explained in video series
Mandatory Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) requirements, and how to navigate them, are explained in a new free-to-access series of videos. They have been developed by the Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping to assist maritime administration personnel, shipowners and operators.
Developing a regulatory framework for autonomous shipping
As part of IMO’s work to ensure its regulatory framework for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships keeps pace with rapidly evolving technological developments, the Joint MSC-LEG-FAL Working Group on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships held its second session (17-21 April 2023) at IMO Headquarters.
Supporting countries to address marine plastic litter
The latest guidance on national planning and implementation issued by the GloLitter Partnerships project has been published. The two newly launched guides are designed to help countries in their efforts to prevent and reduce sea-based marine plastic litter.

The winner of the Singapore-IMO NextGEN Connect Challenge has been announced as Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonization Hub for their proposal on “Development of a Route-Based Action Plan Methodology based upon Silk Alliance”.
FSO SAFER: Call for equipment for oil spill response preparedness
IMO is urging Member States to contribute equipment to help UN-led efforts to prevent a possible catastrophic oil spill from the FSO SAFER, an ageing and rapidly decaying floating storage offshore (FSO) unit moored 4.8 nautical miles off the Red Sea coast of Yemen. IMO is seeking used or near end-of-life spill response equipment that can be transported to the region within weeks.
International organizations meet at IMO
IMO hosted the annual meeting of the UK Based International Organizations (UKBIO) (19 April) at IMO Headquarters. Participants discussed current issues and concerns, including travel authorizations, privileges and immunities, and border restrictions.
