The GloFouling Partnerships project has expanded its outreach by welcoming Panama as one of its beneficiary countries from the Central and South America region.
Arab States and Mediterranean region Audit Scheme auditors receive training
IMO is continuing to help assess how Member States administer key IMO treaties to ensure its regulatory framework is universally adopted and implemented. A five-day regional training course for auditors under IMO's Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS) is being held for auditors from the Arab States and Mediterranean region.
World Maritime University graduates ready to make change happen
The latest batch of future maritime leaders have graduated from the World Maritime University (WMU). The 2022 graduation (31 October) saw 276 graduates from 70 countries receive their Masters and Doctorate awards.
Exploring opportunities for Indonesia in decarbonizing shipping
IMO, in collaboration with the Governments of Indonesia and Denmark, has co-organized and co-sponsored a conference on decarbonization of the shipping sector in Bali, Indonesia (27-28 October). Indonesia is focusing on energy transition as one of three priority areas for its presidency of the G20.
Boosting regional presence with new office in the MENA region
IMO has agreed to boost its regional presence, with the establishment of a regional presence office in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, to be hosted in Alexandria, Egypt. The IMO Technical Cooperation Committee (TC), at its 72nd session (17-20 October) agreed to the establishment to enhance IMO's coordination of technical assistance for the MENA region.
Strengthening National Oil Spill Contingency Plans in Central and Eastern Mediterranean countries
A series of workshops is underway through which IMO is providing support to Central and Eastern Mediterranean countries in oil spill contingency planning. Events have taken place in Bar, Montenegro (13-14 October), Durres, Albania (18-20 October) and Tekirdag, Türkiye (24-26 October), with a further one due in Cairo, Egypt next month (22-23 November).
Maritime single window – opportunities highlighted
An online webinar (24 October) has highlighted the benefits and opportunities for maritime trade arising from the application of the maritime single window (MSW) to electronic ship clearance processes in ports. This single window process will become mandatory for Contracting Governments to the Facilitation (FAL) Convention on 1 January 2024.
Enabling Somalia to develop a legal framework to enhance maritime security
IMO is assisting the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and regional authorities to put in place the required legal framework that gives full and complete effect to IMO instruments dealing with maritime security, during a five-day national workshop (23-27 October) in Mogadishu.
Improving Casualty investigation in Guinea Conakry
Under IMO conventions, the flag State has a duty to investigate any casualty which occurs on/to any of its ships (subject to the provisions of relevant conventions) and to report its findings to IMO through the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS) platform. IMO organized the first in person national training on casualty investigation and reporting in partnership with the government of Guinea since the outbreak of Covid-19 (10 to 21 October).
