New offices for Mediterranean Sea’s REMPEC centre
The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) has moved. The new premises in Floriana, Malta were inaugurated by Mr. Robert Abela, Prime Minister of Malta (3 October) and IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim.
Supporting Francophone west and central Africa on emissions and ballast water rules
The capacity of maritime officials from Francophone countries in west and central Africa to implement two key IMO environment treaties is being strengthened at workshops held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (3-7 October). The training focuses on MARPOL Annex VI on the prevention of air pollution from ships and on energy efficiency; and the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention.
Marking 50 years of protecting the oceans from dumping
IMO is marking five decades of the London Convention, adopted in 1972 to protect the oceans from dumping of wastes. The Convention was updated in 1996 by the London Protocol, a comprehensive stand-alone global agreement, however the two treaties work in conjunction to regulate the dumping of wastes at sea.
IMO Low Carbon Global Industry Initiative celebrates milestone
The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 has celebrated five years of its Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA). The Low Carbon GIA is a public-private partnership that provides a collaborative platform for maritime industry leaders to support an energy efficient and low carbon maritime transport system.
Latin America moves towards improved marine biosecurity
A new regional strategy and action plan to improve marine biosecurity through biofouling management in Latin America has been developed and agreed during a regional meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from 26 to 27 September. The meeting was steered by the Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur (CPPS) and IMO’s GloFouling Partnerships project.
