First regional workshop on independent evaluation for compliance with STCW held in Jeddah
Independent evaluation is an essential part of the STCW Convention requirements, to ensure countries can be kept in the so called “STCW White List”. A regional workshop on awareness and importance of the independent evaluation has been held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (4-8 December), for participants responsible for STCW Independent Evaluation reports from IMO Member States in North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) region.
GloLitter Latin America and Caribbean regional task force meeting underway
A Regional Task Force meeting in Costa Rica is taking place as part of the GloLitter Parnerships project to reduce marine plastic litter from maritime transport and the fishing sector. The event in San Jose (6-9 December) is a chance for Latin American and Caribbean participants to explore twinning opportunities to address marine plastic litter originating from shipping and fisheries in their region.
Free to access e-learning course: "Energy Saving at Sea" launched
A new e-learning course aimed at equipping seafarers with knowledge around reducing energy use onboard a ship has been launched. The free-to-access, self-paced "Energy Saving at Sea" online course comprises two separate modules, one tailored to crew working in the engine department and the other tailored to crew working in the deck department.
Boosting maritime security in Thailand
IMO, in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Department for Transport, is conducting a maritime security needs assessment workshop in Bangkok (28 November to 2 December), organized jointly with the Marine Department of Thailand. The event is being held with a view to developing a roadmap towards the enhanced implementation of IMO maritime security measures in Thailand.
Singapore and the Kingdom of the Netherlands accept IMO Convention amendments
Singapore and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have become the latest countries to accept amendments to the Convention on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which will expand the size of the Council, extend the term of its Members, and recognize three additional language texts as authentic versions of the Convention.
UNCLOS and IMO - 40 years of cooperation
The linkages between the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and IMO were explored during an event held on 28 November at IMO Headquarters to mark 40 years since the “Constitution for the Oceans” was adopted in 1982.
Combating illicit maritime activity - next steps for Jeddah Amendment
Signatory States to the revised Code of Conduct concerning the repression of piracy, armed robbery against ships and illicit maritime activity in the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden Area, also known as the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct (DCoC) 2017, have agreed the next steps to enhance implementation of the amended code. A high-level meeting was held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (22-24 November).
Working towards Malaysia's low carbon future from ships
Proposals for potential low/zero carbon pilot projects were presented at the 2nd National Stakeholders Roundtable, in Penang, Malaysia (23 November) as part of IMO's GreenVoyage2050 Accelerator.
