The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 project, which provides support to developing countries to reduce GHG emissions from ships, has been extended to December 2023.
Opportunities for women in the maritime sector in Eastern and Southern Africa
The Association for Women in the Maritime Sector in Eastern and Southern Africa region (WOMESA) celebrated the IMO International Day for Women in Maritime in the margins of its 10th annual conference and workshop in Kisumu County, Kenya (25-27 May). The event on ‘Women in Maritime: Opportunities and Milestones Achieved’ took stock of WOMESA’s activities since its establishment by IMO in 2007.
Get training on maritime transport policy
A newly revised and updated IMO training programme is now available to assist developing countries in formulating and adopting their National Maritime Transport Policies (NMTPs). The training programme, developed for maritime transport policy capacity-building activities, is delivered in a workshop or a seminar format for a targeted audience.
IMO Symposium looks to break down barriers for women in maritime
The maritime community joined in from all over the world to celebrate the first International Day for Women in Maritime on 18 May 2022. An IMO Symposium (virtual) on "Training-Visibility-Recognition: Supporting a barrier-free working environment for Women in Maritime" heard from nine panelists - seven women and two male allies. They addressed: what type of training supports a barrier-free working environment for women in maritime; how to enhance visibility for women in the workplace/environment; and recognition in the work environment of women's contributions to maritime.
Committing to protect the marine environment in the Caribbean
Caribbean Member States and industry have set the course for the future to protect the Caribbean marine environment during the latest meeting of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Centre – Caribe (RAC/REMPEITC-Caribe). The 10th RAC/REMPEITC-Caribe Steering Committee Meeting (which is held every two years) was held in Curaçao Netherlands (18-19 May).
Abuja MoU: Harmonizing port State control and flag State implementation
Heads of Maritime Administrations in West and Central Africa have discussed port State control and flag State implementation during a three-day regional workshop in Lagos, Nigeria (9-11 May). The main objective was to provide a platform to create awareness on the duties of the Heads of Maritime Administrations and to exchange views to enhance the harmonization of port State control (PSC) activities and flag State implementation in the Abuja MoU region.
Supporting port security in Madagascar
Strengthening port security is the focus of a five-day workshop (9-13 May) in Antananarivo, Madagascar. IMO officials are assisting the maritime administration to develop the legal framework to give full and complete effect to the IMO instruments dealing with maritime security, including the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code).
Supporting Kenya to develop National Maritime Security Risk Register
Identifying emerging threats to maritime security is key in developing the right tools to ensure sound maritime security governance. To address this, thirty participants from multiple Kenyan Government Ministries and Agencies with responsibility for maritime security policy and operational implementation are taking part in a five-day IMO-sponsored workshop (9-13 May). They will assist the Kenyan Government in the development of its National Maritime Security Risk Register.
Enhancing security of cruise terminals in the Seychelles
The Seychelles is an important cruise tourism destination. Screening checkpoints for passengers and their baggage are key in ensuring the safety and security of international ports. A new IMO developed training course in maritime cruise, ferry passenger and baggage screening and searching took place at the Seychelles Defence Academy (26-28 April).
