Programme on technical cooperation to enhance the maritime sector of Solomon Islands
Background
In November 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between IMO, the Kingdom of Belgium and Solomon Islands to establish a programme on technical cooperation to enhance the maritime sector of Solomon Islands.
To this end, Belgium provided financial resources totaling €350.000 (US$ 417,880) for the delivery of the agreed technical assistance activities in Solomon Islands.
Project progress
Several activities have been carried out including:
- Participation of 22 staff from the Solomon Islands Maritime Administration (SIMSA) in long distance courses provided by the Lloyds Maritime Academy, in 2018 and 2019, including:
- Crew Management
- Marine Accident Investigation
- Marine Pollution Prevention and Management Application
- Maritime Management and Leadership
- Ship Management
- Ship Operations
- Ship Superintendency
- Small Craft Surveying
- Participation in the HYPACK software training workshop and HYPACK training attachment, held in Sydney, Australia, 1 to 11 May 2018
- Enrollment on a Class 4 Master course at the Solomon Islands National University, second semester 2018
- Participation on a short course on the Law of the Sea offered by the University of Wollongong, Australia, 18 to 22 June 2018
- Participation in an attachment programme at the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau of Singapore, Singapore, 22 to 26 October 2018
- Participation in an attachment programme at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), Canberra, Australia, 4 to 15 February 2019
- Enrollment on a Class 5 Master course at the Solomon Islands National University, in 2019
- Participation in the Sealite AToN training, Melbourne, Australia, 16 and 17 July 2019
- Delivery of several national workshops on sea safety awareness at border and other hot spot areas by SIMSA
- Participation in an attachment programme for Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) officers, Nouméa, New Caledonia, 2 to 13 December 2019
